Full bio
Some DJs follow the sound. Others help shape it. For nearly three decades, Reid Speed has been a defining presence in American underground dance music. A pioneering DJ, producer, and champion of emerging talent, she's built her career on fearless musical exploration, extraordinary technical skill, and an undeniable connection to the dancefloor. Best known for her influence on North American drum & bass, Reid has never been confined by genre. Jungle, UK garage, breaks, house, and the full spectrum of underground bass music are all part of her musical DNA. Her performances are energetic, unpredictable, and expertly crafted, weaving deep selections, unexpected turns, and explosive moments into an experience that keeps audiences moving. Her career took shape in the fiercely competitive underground rave scene of New York City, where she became a resident DJ for the influential Stuck on Earth crew. She also worked at the legendary Breakbeat Science, America's first dedicated jungle and drum & bass record shop, which later released her first two mix CDs. Those formative years helped establish Reid as a pioneering force in American drum & bass and launched a career that would take her to stages around the world. From multiple appearances at Ultra Music Festival to Electric Daisy Carnival, Shambhala, Hospitality on the Beach, SUNANDBASS, Beyond Wonderland, and Nocturnal Wonderland, Reid has performed at some of electronic music's most recognized events. Beyond the decks, Reid is the co-founder of Play Me Records and Play Me Too, influential independent labels that have helped introduce and champion hundreds of artists, including early releases from Dillon Francis, Bro Safari, Eliminate, and MUST DIE!. Her productions and remixes have appeared on labels including Viper, ProgRAM, Space Yacht, and Play Me, while her guest mixes have reached audiences through BBC Radio 1, triple j, RAM Live, and Beatport. But what sets Reid apart is more than her résumé. She's a lifelong student of underground music, a dedicated supporter of emerging talent, and the kind of DJ who brings the same passion to an intimate club as she does a festival stage. Her technical precision is matched by genuine musical intuition, and her excitement for discovering new sounds remains as strong as ever. She's not chasing trends. She's not playing it safe. And she's certainly not living in the past. Reid Speed helped shape the culture, continues to push it forward, and knows exactly what to do when she steps behind the decks.
